This Jim Crow relic has got to go. It has no place in a functioning democracy, and allows a tyrannical minority to impose their will on the majority. In my memory, one of the most egregious uses of this rule was by the much revered Senator Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. He always denied being a racist, but his actions failed to match the claim. He was a rabid opponent of Civil Rights legislation, and conducted the longest speaking filibuster ever to oppose the Civil Rights Act of 1957. He stayed too long, serving until 100 years old, but that is a topic for another time.
If you look at the history of the filibuster, it was used most often by segregationist senators. The entire record shows most were used to block civil rights efforts. Why on earth would Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky use the filibuster to block making lynching a federal hate crime?
President Biden's entire agenda is threatened by this asinine procedure, and it comes at a time when the country cried out for big and bold. Hopeful for FDR style action, the country's majority demands it. Senator McConnell and the GOP will use the filibuster to block it all. It is the tool they will use to block the majority's will.
Time is running out. The filibuster is the poison that will kill our democracy. If we do not want to be ruled by autocrats and the tyranny of the minority, we absolutely must abolish it now.
If we wait, it may be too late.
